The village of Rio Lagartos is located on the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula nearly equal distance (2 1/2hrs)from Merida and Cancun.(1 1/2 hrs) from Chichen Itza and (1hr) from Ek Balaam.

Narrow islands protect the shallow harbor from the Gulf of Mexico giving excellent protection for the large fleet of launches  used by fishermen.

Rio Lagartos is an important part of the Yucatan's fishing

industry.

Two fishing cooperatives

operate from here, using hook and line for a wide variety of fish.

Fishermen dive for lobster.

During the octopus season the catch is processed here for shipment worldwide.

Eco-Tourism is fast becoming an important part of the local economy.

A few small hotels and posadas provide lodging for visiting birdwatchers, fishermen and those looking for a quiet

beautiful place.

Hotel Tabasco Rio

Rio Lagartos Adventures

provides  a wide variety of low impact ways to enjoy the Rio Lagartos Bio-Reserve which surrounds the village.
